editor reviews

Dear Passengers is a text-based social deduction game where you chat with strangers on a train and try to figure out who among them is not human. It is a pure mobile title, so you will not find it on Steam, Xbox, or Switch. The game first launched on Android and iOS, and you can grab it from Google Play or the App Store. On Google Play it has passed 100,000 installs, which is solid for a niche chat game. The best part is that it is free to download and install, and you can play the whole thing without spending a cent. There are optional in-app purchases, mostly for removing ads or unlocking extra story chapters, and they usually run a few dollars each. The ads are not shoved in your face, which I appreciated.

You play by reading through conversations and picking your replies, kind of like a visual novel mixed with a social deduction puzzle. Each passenger has their own personality, and your job is to spot the odd one out before things go wrong. You tap through dialogue, choose who to trust, and sometimes the wrong choice gets you killed. What I love most is how the game messes with your head. You think you have figured out the liar, then a new message pops up and you start doubting everything. The atmosphere is tense in the best way, and the writing keeps you hooked. I found myself replaying routes just to see what happens if I trust the wrong person.

Compared to similar games like Reigns or other chat-based mystery apps, Dear Passengers feels more personal because the conversations are so weird and unsettling. It is not as flashy as big budget mobile games, but that is exactly why I recommend it. If you enjoy Among Us style suspicion but want something slower and story-driven, this is a great pick. Just download it from Google Play, install it, and give the first chapter a shot. It is short, strange, and worth your time.

features

  • Chat-based deduction 🔍 - You read messages from passengers and reply to uncover who is human and who is not, which makes every choice feel important.
  • Branching story paths 🌿 - Your replies change the ending, so replaying gives you new scenes instead of the same script.
  • Creepy atmosphere 🎭 - The writing and pacing build tension better than many action-heavy mobile games, and it costs nothing to try.

pros

  • Free and easy to install 🎉 - Unlike paid mystery games on Google Play, you can download and start playing without paying upfront.
  • Strong writing ✍️ - The dialogue feels natural and unsettling, which beats the flat text in similar chat games.
  • Short sessions ⏱️ - You can play a chapter in a few minutes, making it perfect for breaks, unlike longer visual novels.

cons

  • Limited replay value 🔁 - Once you know the twists, the tension drops, and it does not have the endless matches of Among Us.
  • Occasional ads 📺 - The free version shows ads between chapters, which can break the mood.
  • Small scope 🧩 - It is a short experience compared to bigger story apps, so do not expect dozens of hours.
