editor reviews

BeamNG.drive is a vehicle simulation game built around soft-body physics, and it is one of the most satisfying sandbox driving experiences you can find. It is developed by BeamNG GmbH and it is available on PC through Steam, with no official release on android, google play, or any app store for phones. The game first showed up in 2013 as a tech demo and has been in continuous development ever since, launching properly on Steam in 2015. It is not a free game, so you have to buy it, and there are no in app ads or microtransactions once you own it. The base price sits around twenty five US dollars, and it does go on sale fairly often if you are patient. It is not a pure mobile game in any sense, and there is no console version on xbox or switch right now, so a decent PC is the only way to play it properly.

You play it like any other driving sandbox. You pick a map, pick a car, and then do whatever you want. Crash it, race it, drift it, tow it, or just cruise around the open world. The best part is the damage model. Nothing else comes close. When you hit a wall, the car actually crumples, the suspension bends, the engine can fall out, and every crash feels different. My favorite thing is loading up a big sedan, driving it off a cliff, and watching the replay in slow motion. I have spent way too many hours just messing with the physics settings and seeing what breaks first. The career mode is still in beta, but the free roam and the scenarios are where most of my time goes.

I have played a lot of driving games, and BeamNG.drive stands out because it does not hold your hand. Compared to something like Forza Horizon, which is polished but very arcadey, or Assetto Corsa, which is serious racing but has stiff damage, this game is all about the chaos. It is not for everyone. The frame rate can drop on weaker PCs, and the UI is a bit clunky. But if you like tinkering, breaking things, and seeing real physics play out, nothing else feels like it. I recommend it over the usual racing titles because it gives you freedom that those games simply do not have. You are not chasing a lap time, you are just playing with a very expensive toy box.

features

  • Realistic soft body damage 💥 The car deforms in real time, so a fender bender looks different every single time.
  • Huge modding community 🛠️ You can download thousands of cars and maps for free, which keeps the game fresh long after you install it.
  • Detailed vehicle tuning ⚙️ You can adjust tire pressure, suspension, gear ratios, and even engine parts, which goes way deeper than most racing games.

pros

  • Unmatched crash physics 💯 No other driving game makes a simple collision feel this good, and it beats Forza and Assetto Corsa on damage detail by a mile.
  • Endless replay value 🔁 The mods and the sandbox nature mean you never really run out of things to try, unlike linear racing games that dry up fast.
  • Honest dev updates 🧑‍🔧 The team keeps adding content and fixes, which is rare for a game this old.

cons

  • Performance heavy 🐌 It will chug on older PCs, and even mid range rigs struggle with big crashes and traffic, which is a real pain compared to lighter games like Forza.
  • Clunky menus 🧭 The UI feels dated and confusing, especially when you are trying to install mods or set up a scenario.
  • No proper career yet 📉 The career mode is still unfinished, so if you want a structured campaign like Assetto Corsa or Gran Turismo, you will be waiting.
