Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival MMO set on Arrakis, the deadly desert planet from Frank Herbert's sci-fi universe. Funcom built this one for PC first, and you can grab it on Steam. As of now, there is no console version on Xbox or Switch, and it is not a mobile title either, so you will not find it on the Google Play Store or the App Store. The game launched on PC in June 2025, and it is a buy-to-play package rather than a free download. You pay once for the base game, and there is an optional season pass and a cash shop for cosmetic items. No ads, thankfully. If you want to play it, you install it through Steam, and you need a decent rig because Arrakis is huge and the sandstorms do not mess around.

You start by creating your character and picking a cast of skills, then you get dropped onto Arrakis with almost nothing. The loop is familiar if you have touched survival games before: gather resources, build a base, craft gear, and try not to get eaten by giant sandworms. What makes it click for me is how the desert itself feels like an enemy. You have to manage water, watch the sun, and read the sand for worm signs. The best part is the spice. Hunting spice blooms with a group while a worm is circling underneath is genuinely tense, and the rewards feel worth the risk. I also love that you can build a base that actually matters, and the vehicle combat adds a layer that most survival games skip entirely.

Compared to something like Conan Exiles, also from Funcom, Dune: Awakening feels more focused and more dangerous. Conan gives you a big sandbox but the threat is mostly other players and monsters. Here the environment is the star. If you have played Rust or Ark: Survival Evolved, you will recognize the grind, but Dune trims some of the busywork and pushes you toward exploration. I recommend it over those games if you want a survival experience with real atmosphere and a story that pulls you forward. It is not perfect, and the server population matters a lot, but if you like the genre and the Dune universe, it is an easy recommendation. Just do not expect to play it on your android phone, because that is not happening.

features

  • Open desert survival 🏜️: You manage water, heat, and sandworms while building a base, which is deeper than the simple hunger bars in Ark: Survival Evolved.
  • Spice hunting runs 🌶️: Group up to harvest spice before a worm arrives, and the risk-reward loop is more exciting than the resource runs in Conan Exiles.
  • Vehicle combat 🚙: You can outfit buggies and ornithopters with weapons, and this gives you options that most survival games in this genre simply do not offer.
  • Persistent world 🌍: Other players share your server, so bases and politics matter, similar to Rust but with a sci-fi twist.

pros

  • Atmosphere that sells the setting 🌪️: Arrakis feels hostile and alive, and that beats the generic maps in many survival games.
  • Strong group play 👥: Spice runs and base defense are better with friends, and the social side is more rewarding than the solo grind in Ark: Survival Evolved.
  • Polished combat for the genre ⚔️: Melee and ranged fights feel tighter than Conan Exiles, and the vehicle sections are a real highlight.

cons

  • PC only 💻: No android, no console, no Google Play Store listing, so if your friends are on mobile they cannot join you.
  • Server dependence 📡: A low-population server makes the world feel empty, and that is a bigger issue here than in Rust.
  • Steep entry cost 💰: The buy-to-play price plus a cash shop is a harder sell than free alternatives, and the grind can feel long before you hit the fun stuff.
